Antique pair of mother-of-pearl communion crosses in solid silver, Christian religion, 19th-20th century

  

A beautiful set of 2 communion crosses in mother-of-pearl and solid silver. This type of cross was part of the education and religious journey of many people for nearly a hundred years.

Indeed, wearing this cross during the ceremony was essential. These pieces are particularly elaborate and were not intended for all social classes.

They were certainly designed in the workshop of a skilled jeweler, perhaps even a master goldsmith. The mother-of-pearl is delicate, and the silver parts are all manually secured by silver riveting as well. The ends of the cross are decorated with symbols of Christianity: Mary, Jesus, a chalice for Communion, and a dove for the Holy Spirit.
