Antique Silver Caping Modesty Plate, Indonesia, 19th Century
A 19th-century silver caping. Worn and broken, but authentic. This modesty covering was worn by young girls in Indonesia. This example would have belonged to a girl from a wealthy or noble family.
Gold versions also existed, while those worn by poorer girls were made from coconut shells.
It served as a protective amulet against occult forces and wandering spirits. This example, bearing a patina and showing wear and breakage from use, features finely worked floral motifs and scrolling foliage in relief.
