Chain length: 75cm; each silver tube link measures 4cm in length and the faceted cornalins measure about 1.4cm in diameter. The small plate (calligraphed on the front/fish on the back) measures 2cm x 3.8cm. The hollow triangular pendant is actually a small box that opens, where prayers were put; it measures 4.8cm height x 6cm width (excluding stamps). The stamps are 4cm to 7cm long; they consist of faceted cornalines and hollow silver beads, with alternating bells (0.7cm in diameter) in silver and Ottoman coins (1.8cm in diameter) in silver. Money has two different qualities.

The silver quality of Ottoman coins should be the same (600 or more). The tube links as well as the hollow beads are not punched, but are silver 800 (or more), all like the bells (punched) and the rings (some are punched, others not). Conditions: very good condition, complete (no shortage); worn but with a nice patina, the money was not cleaned.

Very rare museum piece, or to wear! Similar amulets are in the collections of the branly quai in Paris. The zar cult was and still is practiced in Egypt and other Muslim countries.

Introduced to Egypt since Lethiopy in the late 18th or early 19th century, the zar ceremonies serve to exorcise the demons that cause physical or mental illness to someone. Ceremonies can last for days and consist of ecstatic dances, drum beats, singing, burning aromatic substances, and sometimes animal sacrifices.

The sick wear many amulets and jewels according to the zar spirit that possesses them; the sound of bells is used to drive away spirits. Each piece of this necklace and the beautiful and long chain to which the amulet attaches are handmade with the know-how of Egyptian craftsmen. The Ottoman influence is apparent in the form of silver thread beads the work of metal around faceted cornish cornish and coins. If multiple purchase, contact me before.
